Your Dubai dining diary for May

Hunters Dubai

Hunters at the Westin – lightbox detail

Dubai has a plateful of quirky dining, wine and even cooking experiences this month, more so than the typically mundane asparagus promotions, so here’s a round-up of the top five events that have caught FooDiva’s eye.

  • Café Belge at The Ritz-Carlton DIFC is hosting visiting chef Yves Mattagne who helms two Michelin star restaurant Sea Grill in Brussels for three dinners from 11th to 13th May. With a heavy focus on seafood, expect a five-course degustation menu for AED 450 – or if, like me, you don’t like to be told what to eat, he has a series of a la carte dishes. • Jumeirah Restaurant Week returns for the fourth year from 14th to 23rd May, with over 40 Jumeirah restaurants in Dubai and Abu Dhabi participating serving three-course set menus across four price tiers from AED 95 to AED 370. New for this year’s edition are four wine pairing packages. It’s a great way to tick restaurants off your bucket list at an affordable price point. T:+971 4 3665866; E: JRGreservations@jumeirah.com
  • Another Belgian restaurant, Maison Mathis at the Dusit Thani has a wine pairing dinner with a journey around the West Mediterranean region on the 20th May priced at AED 225. T: +971 4 3517279 E: bonjour@mm-dusit.com
  • The Jumeirah cooking school and catering service, Top Chef is on the hunt for the ‘Best Amateur Cook in the UAE’. So what’s the deal? Upload your best recipe and photos here by the 21st May. A panel of judges will shortlist to eight participants based on pairing of ingredients, creativity and presentation. You will be asked to recreate your recipe in their kitchen on the 25th May, with two people going forward for the finale on the 8th June. Disclosure – FooDiva is on the judging panel at the finale.
  • Wagyu beef striploin tataki

Hunters Room & Grill, the steakhouse at the The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi has introduced a new Japanese Wagyu beef to its a la carte menu, whilst also creating a special five-course degustation menu available for an unlimited period. This particular Wagyu boasts the highest A-5 grade from the Miyazaki prefecture, the second largest producer of Japanese Black (after Kobe). The striploin tataki that I tried was, for want of a much-overused phrase, melt-in-the-mouth. The menu is priced at AED 750 for food only, AED 1,050 with wine pairing, and a staggering AED 1,450 matched with whiskies. Clearly my dine around experiences are a bargain in comparison 😉 T: +971 4 5117136.

  • And on that note, allow me a sixth event with a shameless plug for my next #DineAroundDubai experience on 25th May. And the last one before Ramadan kicks in, even though we will have an event later in the summer for those peeps who don’t have the luxury of escaping the heat. Expect five high-end ‘secret’ restaurants serving a different course and cuisine; Ruinart Brut champagne and fine wines paired by MMI; Careem car transfers; meet the chefs; and FooDiva as your guide. Bookable on Lime & Tonic here. If you have never registered on Lime & Tonic then do so here first to receive an AED100 credit just for FooDiva readers.

Any more that have caught your eye? Provided Dubai continues to see some unusual foodie events, would you like to see this round-up become a regular FooDiva feature?

A bientôt.

Very useful roundup and yes I think it would be very good to have a regular update as the Dubai Dining Scene is ever changing so quickly.
