A Chinese fine dining experience at Hukama, plus a competition – brought to you by The Address Downtown Dubai

HukamaDubai; You asked for more competitions FooDiva Friends, and to show we’re all ears, now’s your opportunity to win a three course dinner for two at Hukama, the Chinese fine dining restaurant at The Address Downtown Dubai. But first, what’s Hukama all about?

Well the menu’s mostly Cantonese; the more internationally accepted cuisine of China. Starting off with dim sum, FooDiva’s highlight was the chicken char siew pau; those barbequed bready buns of deliciousness. Follow with the deep fried king prawns appetiser drooling with wasabi sauce and a drizzle of mango salsa; even my dining companion who’s not a fan of wasabi relished this dish. Wasabi prawns

No Chinese for FooDiva is complete without duck and pancakes; Hukama’s Peking duck is a succulent, tender roast served diced with the crispy skin intact. Thankfully here’s a restaurant that provides enough pancakes (warm and fresh by the way) to wipe your plate clean of plump duck – accompanied by the proverbial shredded scallions, sliced cucumber and plum sauce.

Wok-fried black pepper beefLike with most Chinese – meals that is, our bellies were almost bursting, but our mains still called. The wok-fried black pepper beef; a tender diced fillet with the spicy, red chilli, garlic (and black pepper) infused sauce was impeccably palatable. A fried soft shell crab with Sichuan pepper, whilst soft and crumbly would make a better starter option. We asked for pak choy, lightly wok-fried, even though it wasn’t on the menu and they dished it up perfectly al dente, along with bowls of steamed rice. Deep fried soft shell crab

Quite how my fit fellow diner managed to eat two whole desserts all by himself I don’t quite know; a mango ginger crème brulee with iced lemon basil, and a chilled mango and pomelo soup with berries and sago pearls – all I could do, was digest with freshly brewed jasmine blossom tea.

Whilst the interior is a tad too austere, not helped by the lack of music – the Chinese waiters and waitresses all dressed in beautiful traditional embroidered satin outfits made up for this with friendly, accommodating service, even on a busy weekend.

Before you leave, catch a glimpse of Burj Khalifa on the outdoor terrace, whilst taking in Bocelli and the magical fountains. Love a hotel with good night cap options so head down to Calabar or up to Neos to end your soiree.

And now for our giveaway, a three-course dinner for two at Hukama including soft beverages. FooDiva Friends in Dubai, all you need to do is tell us your favourite Chinese dish and why. Leave your answer as a comment on this post. You can increase your chances of winning by also Liking and commenting on my Facebook page, and retweeting my tweet mentioning @foodivaworld.

The competition closes on Sunday, October 23rd when the clock strikes midnight, and we’ll pick one winner randomly out of a Chinese teapot on October 24th. Remember to leave your email so we can notify you – you’ll have 24 hours to claim your prize otherwise we’ll just have to select another winner.

Hukama at The Address Downtown Dubai (the tall gleaming white skyscraper overlooking Dubai’s magical fountains). T; +971 4 8883444 E; dine@theaddress.com Open daily for dinner, plus Yum Cha brunch on a Friday. Licensed. Dinner for two including alcoholic beverages AED 700.

Good luck!

A bientôt.

thank you for posting this fooDIva! what a freebie for our cantonese taste buds!

my favourite is hong kong streetfood, where everything can fit in one dish. most people dont know that cantonese is actually a developed slang, and like the language cantonese food was developed from emigrants coloring the streets with new flavours when they moved to guangdong (canton) 🙂

pls leave me a note here if i win, i would use it to show all my family back in hk:

So hard…so so hard to figure out my favorite Chinese dish. I’m gonna say sweet and sour prawns. Sweet, sour, sticky, crispy fried prawn skin, soft mushy saucey prawn insides…yeah, this dish is worthy of my tummy lovin’

I didn’t get that dang deep fryer, but I have a feeling this giveaway is gonna be all mine. (Chinese teapot, I hope you’re hearing me.)

Chinese food is a cuisine distinguished by the contrasts in their dishes. You will have crunchy and soft in the same dish, hot and sour with sweet and sour. To me, the most perfect example of this complete dish is the Hot & Sour soup, which is my all time favorite! You have crunchy vegetables, soft tofu, hot from the peppers, and just a hint of sour for the contrast loaded with flavor & your choice of seafood or chicken meat! what else would you want to start off with at the beginning of your Chinese culinary journey!
I like the broth to be dark as some restaurants make their Hot & Sour with a light broth (I NEVER return to those restaurants!)The Hot & Sour soup is my first gauge of the quality of the food in a Chinese restaurant!

Sweet & sour chicken is my all time favourite. Love the coating on the chicken, and the sauce is so delicious. Struggle to find a nice sweet & sour in Dubai, so hopefully they will have a great version. I keep trying to cook it at home, but as of yet, I haven’t perfected it.

  13. priscilla October 18, 2011 at 1:08 pm

My favorite would be chicken stir fry in ginger and oyster sauce. Aaah, just the thought makes my mouth water 🙂

  14. Susanna October 18, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Stir fried beef with broad rice noodles/Beef chow fun/gong chau ngau ho – is definitely my favorite dish! Even though it’s a very common dish to get in Cantonese Chinese restaurants (aside form Dubai for some odd reason), it’s a dish that few restaurants can cook well…missing it immensely so if someone finds a restaurant that can cook this in Dubai, let me know!

  15. Richelle October 18, 2011 at 1:31 pm

Chinese Chilli Salt Squid – a small hidden away Chinese restaurant in Sydney’s China Town had this dish perfected. I still dream about that dish after having it 15 years ago!!

  16. Claire October 18, 2011 at 1:37 pm

  22. Renu RB October 18, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Since I am a vegetarian, I am very careful when selecting Chinese restaurants. I loved this exotic melt-in-the-mouth Deep fried pi pa tofu cucumber salad with sweet and sour jelly mango salsa which proved both light and crispy.

  23. Abigail October 18, 2011 at 4:23 pm

My all time favorite – Peking Duck!

  24. Susan October 18, 2011 at 4:30 pm

My all time favourite, and a Chinese meal is not complete for me without it, is hot and sour soup. I love the fabulous balance of hot, sweet, rich, sour and the crunchy vegetables, silky tofu and sometimes tiny prawns. Its also incredibly easy to make (I use Ken Hom’s recipe) and always makes my friends smile.
If I had to choose a last meal it would be hot and sour soup to start, a really big bowl for a main and another one for desert!

  25. Nicole October 18, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Stir-fried scallops and vegetables in black bean sauce – hmmm, delicious!

  29. Fahad Shalabi October 19, 2011 at 2:20 am

I love Peking Duck, It has always been one of my favorite Chinese dishes. The crispiness of the duck skin, the richness and moistness of the beautiful dark duck meat, the sweetness of the hoisin sauce, the freshness of the spring onions and cucumber sticks, all wrapped up in the warm pancake wrap..ummm…mouthwatering and delectable.

  30. Tommy October 19, 2011 at 8:05 am

My wife’s favourite is Kung Pao Prawns with Mixed Fried Rice, that all that she craves for during her first few weeks of pregancy. Why? her taste buds have a tingle for Chinese foods, ‘coz she feels its more boiled and less fried ingredients and most of all Chinese food makes her feels light on the stomach.

  31. farah chahal October 19, 2011 at 9:41 am

my favorite dish is sweet and sour chicken .
i love chinese food and i love the taste of the sweetness in the chicken it is a very extraordinary taste that once you feel it you would always ask for it.

  32. Nishathulayn October 19, 2011 at 10:15 am

My favourite chinese dish would be ‘the chinese fried icecream’..Specially when it is served with caramel sauce..ummmm…its just YUMMM….!!!!:)
The taste still lingers in my mouth. To my surprise not many of the chinese restaurants serve that here, and everytime I go to a Chinese joint I first check on this dish..

Now why am i a big fan of this…
Well,it is Great anytime! Delicious and a real pleaser for that sweet tooth of mine 🙂 and I bet,No one can just stop with one…

  33. Rakesh October 19, 2011 at 11:40 am

I am a big fan of dimsums in any form; fried, steam or baked and in any size. I can gorge of dimsums only and eat my hearts content.

  34. Ulrike October 19, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Call me sad, but I always judge a new Chinese restaurant by their Chicken and Cashew Nuts dish. If it’s good, I’ll try other dishes… At Hukama though my absolute favourite are the Wasabi King Prawns, sooo good!

  35. Nicki October 19, 2011 at 2:16 pm

Really enjoyed Hukama when we went a couple of years ago. They used to have a Friday dimsum brunch – great alternative to the standard brunch options.

My enjoyment of Cantonese / Chinese food in Dubai is somewhat hampered by the absence of pork, which is used a lot in Chinese cooking. My favourite dishes have to be pork char sui, which you can see hung in windows everwhere in Hong Kong, or san choi bao – little yummy finger food parcels of minced pork wrapped in lettuce leaves. Yummy!

  36. Neha Rag October 19, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Yum, I love Chinese food, and would love to win this.

  37. Maura Hales October 19, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Chinese food is one of the world’s most colorful and versatile cuisines. My all time favorite Chinese dish is Tofu and aubergine claypot in black bean sauce with shiitake mushrooms. I love this humble clay pot dish, with both main ingredients, tofu and aubergine cooked to silky-smooth perfection, and the shiitake mushrooms boosting an already powerful flavor mix. Eaten with plain white rice, it’s the best.

  38. Naomi Rebello October 20, 2011 at 2:43 pm

My favourite chinese food is definitely Dim Sum! Soo delicious especially when it melts in your mouth.

  39. Simon Clough October 20, 2011 at 3:42 pm

For me it has got to be properly prepared Crispy Aromatic Duck (its kind of different to the Peking Duck you had as the skin is crunchier).
Firstly you have the theatre of preparation at the table. They careful removal of this amazing skin then the stripping of the tender threads of flesh from the carcass. Then with ideally home-made pancakes, you can add the wonderfully flavored hoi-sin sauce, the julienne of fresh cucumber (to balance the fatty duck meat) and also some shredded spring onion. Then finally some of the duck and plenty of crispy skin. Quickly rolled and devoured in seconds. I’ve been known to eat over 10 of these in one sitting at one of the restaurant in London’s Chinatown. I REALLY want to win now as I’m salivating for a great Chinese meal….

  40. Brona Torokova October 22, 2011 at 4:56 pm

My favourite Chinese food is kung pao chicken and peking duck with dumplings. Delicious:-).

  41. TAMER ALGAMAL October 22, 2011 at 5:11 pm

  42. Didi October 22, 2011 at 5:13 pm

My favorite chinese dish? Do I have to name only 1????

Hargao / Hakaw – sweet shrimp encased in a soft translucent rice pillow
Xiao Long Bao – dumplings with a soupy surprise inside 🙂
Maki – a thick gooey, cornstarch based soup with pork
salt and pepper squid and / or spareribs- NEVER gummy!
hot prawn salad – plump sweet prawn dressed in mayonaise topped with mangoes. ohhhhh.

Red bean dumplings or sticky black sesame balls in almond milk for dessert

How I miss chinese food already! I haven’t tasted a decent chinese dish in dubai just yet 🙁

  47. Cecilia Cairo, Dubai October 23, 2011 at 11:37 am

I love Chinese Dim Sums because there is a lot of varity when it comes to Dim Sums. It has no oil and it is good on the stomach. You will never feel sick after eating them.

  48. Ritu October 23, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Thanks again for the opportunity to visit Hukama.

I went on Saturday evening with a friend and we both loved it!

Hightlights include: wasabi prawns, the chinese 3 treasure seafood appetizer, and the honeybaked cod. Extra special mention has to go to the spiced chocolate fondant – because it was incredible. Really really good.

Overall my friend and I were really impressed with the food and supremely happy we got to experience it!

I blogged a bit more about the food myself – because it was worth it! lol.

    Thanks again 🙂

    • FooDiva October 30, 2011 at 7:46 pm

Hi Smruti. Glad it lived up to FooDiva’s review 🙂 Looks like the honey baked cod should be on my order next time. Thanks for sharing your experience.
